Antique English Walnut Georgian revival serpentine fronted Side Cabinet.

A$995.00

This is an interesting piece as it was made in the first quarter of the 1900s so it now technically qualifies as being a genuine antique as it is now just over 100 years old.

The Cabinet is a Side Cabinet and has been made in the genuine antique English mid 1700s Georgian manner and is finished in figured Walnut. This is not unusual as furniture styles are in and out of popularity due to fashion trends. What is interesting is that this cabinet was ‘antiqued’ or made to look older than what it was when it was first made. Possibly so it would sit comfortably in a room with then other genuine period pieces.

The cabinet has a desirable and infrequently found serpentine front which involved far more time labour and materials than a straight fronted cabinet and consequently were much more expensive.

All sections of the front are of serpentine form including the overhanging top, top full width flush fitting drawer, the pair of cupboard doors and the base with its shaped ‘ogee’ bracket feet.

The top has a decorative complex edge molding and an outer four sided cross banding with two inner lines of ‘herring bone’ line inlays. The main inner panel is ‘book leaf’ matched figured Walnut. This theme is continued throughout the full Oak lined full width flush fitting drawer ( complete with its lock and brass drawer pull handles ) and the pair of flush fitting doors with their brass key hole escutcheon. Within the cupboard is a full width shelf.

Condition: It is hard to tell what was deliberate in the antiquing process and what is now natural aging. There are a few old however insignificant repairs due to age and having lived a life so lets call it character.
