Antique Irish Victorian period Walnut Davenport Desk by Robert Strahan.....SOLD

Please make no mistake as this is a superb ‘exhibition’ quality, genuine antique Irish mid 19th century Victorian period Davenport Desk of exceptional craftsmanship. The desk is constructed from quality imported Mahogany and then dressed in selected highly figured book leaf matched Walnut of lovely deep honey colour.

The desk has the original paper label for renowned Irish designer and cabinetmaker Robert Strahan and Company ( established 1776 ) 24 and 25 Henry Street Dublin. The top internal draw is also stamped with his name and is numbered.

Robert Strahan exhibited at the Great Irish Exhibition in 1853 and also in the Great London Exhibition in I862. He specialised in making the finest quality furniture for Public officials and for some of the great Irish country homes. His furniture designs are on permanent exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland.

All the decorative embellishments such as the boldly turned finials saw pierced fret work gallery, Full height turned rear corner free standing columns, carved upper door moldings, bun feet and the superb front French Rococo style “S’ shaped scrolls with all the associated pierced carved decorative foliate carvings are in solid Walnut.

The lift lid hinged writing surface has an original inset tooled leather writing surface which may be replaced with a colour of your choice if required. When raised the writing slope lid reveals an excellent interior comprising of the storage well and a bank of small drawers. The whole area is beautifully finished in Walnut burl.

The pedestal appears to have two panelled doors each with top decorative crest carvings however one is faux and the other lockable door opens to reveal a bank of individually lockable full width graduated and stacked drawers each with a pair of turned knob drawer pulls.

The whole is supported on four flattened bun feet each with the original all brass castor assemblies beneath.

Condition: Very good as is original condition however like all furniture about 170 years it has lived a life and would benefit from a light professional refurbishment so as to bring out its best. Photographed just as it came to us from our clients house.

Size: Width 67cm x Depth 71cm x Height 92cm.

Price: Davenport Desks of this quality are rare and on overseas selling sites command serious money however we are in Australia where quality is available at much lesser prices. This exceptional piece is priced in ‘as is’ very good mellowed original condition at $3,985. If refurbishment ( detail and cleanup ) is required we can organise it to be professionally detailed and refurbished on your behalf at a cost to us trade price of $1,000 to $1,250 including gold tooled leather with the colour of your choice.

At the time of listing ( for comparative reference ) on the internet I could find a Robert Strahan circular Dining Table for A$23,598, a four door wardrobe for A$27,739 and a Whatnot Stand for $10,000 and I have included the images of these items. If this superb and important Davenport Desk made by Robert Strahan were overseas it could bring around 5 times the price that it is available here in Australia.
