This is an excellent example of a genuine antique English George II period made circa 1755 Writing Bureau.
Being totally crafted from solid boards of Oak of excellent figuring it is a country made piece so exhibits lots of country rustic charm however is a formal item that would have been made for an educated country Gentleman of some standing and education.
The desk has a sloping drop front which when opened rests on a pair of pull out loafers. There are a pair of top side by side shallow drawers with three stacked graduated drawers beneath. All draws are flush fitting and correctly for age have Oak draw linings running front to back. All drawers have their original iron locks, and later replacement however appropriate all bras keyhole escutcheons and brass draw pull handles with pierced backing plates. The whole stands on corner positioned straight bracket feet.
The writing section interior has a gold tooled inset leather writing surface and a storage well with a sliding cover. The superstructure has a central door with two small concealed drawers within. Either side there are open shelves and end cascading tiers of two stacked drawers each with turned bone drawer pull knobs as does the cupboard door.
At the rear of the cupboard there is a secret apartment opened via the storage well.
Provenance: Purchased in 1993 from Queen Street Woollahra dealer Mr. Paul Attard who was a close associate of Martyn Cook who was one of the best dealers in Georgian period antiques. We have the original sales ticket for $8,500 and the then “93 sales receipt for $7,530, including carriage.
Condition: Excellent commensurate with age and use over the past (approx ) 270 years.
