This is an an exceptionally good quality genuine antique French later 19th century ( circa 1880s ) Writing Table / Desk or as the French would refer to it as a Bureau Plat.in the stylish Louis XVI revival manner.

The Writing Table is finished all round so it may stand in a room and away from a wall if required.

The desk top is basically of rectangular form with gently curved ends that are stepped in at either end. The desk top has a broard Coromandel banding with a pale green gold tooled inset writing surface and has a “string of pearls’ gilt bronze perimeter molding. The Desk top has a raised gallery shapeped to match which is supported on four elegand shaped and turned fluted columns and is finished wirh a shaped three sided cast brass and pierced gallery.

The frieze section compliments the shape of the top and has two panelled side by side drawers which like all the other recessed panels have fine gilt brass ‘chain of pearls’ moldings. In the centre of each recessed panel ( both large and small ) are decorative applied gilt bronze mounts.

The Table is supported on four corner positioned turned and downward tapered fluted legs with applied gilt ring moldings top and bottom and within the flutes are more cast bronze gilt embellished decorative mounts. The legs terminate with the original all brass castor assemblies.

Condition: The cabinet work and polish are in excellent near original condition. The leather writing surface and gold tooling have been replaced and are in excellent condition.

Sellers Observation: They don’t come much better quality than this. We have a similar desk with more inlay however without a gallery shelf so the choice is yours.
