Antique Japanese Meiji period Carved and Lacquered Desk with Chair....SOLD
This is a very decorative genuine antique Japanese Meiji period ( 1868 - 1912 ) Writing Desk with a complimentary period carved Chair.
The desk is rectangular in form with a removable raised rear superstructure. The shaped superstructure backboard features a carved mountain with apposed dragons on either side, flowers for drawer handles and stylised clouds to the cabinet sides. There are tiered shelves vertical correspondence rack two drawers and a compartment with sliding panels. The writing surface has a geometric carved outer banding and two painted and gilded panels featuring abird flowers and clouds while the other panel features a dragon and clouds. The frieze / apron is profusely carved on the front and sides and the apron flows onto four carved cabriole legs.
This desk is made from Pine and has a two tone lacquered finish as the top black layer has worn in parts to reveal the red layer beneath. The Western style of desk with the Oriental decorative influence was made for the export market due to the Western interest in all things Oriental.
The complimenting chair also features a mountain, dragon and clouds.
Condition: Average for age. Complete and structurally sound with the back lacquer worn exposing the red lacquer ber coating.
