Antique French last quarter of the 19th century Louis XVI style Writing Table / Desk. / Bureau Plat.

A$5,485.00

This is a very high quality French later 1800s Louis XVI style Writing Table / Desk or as the French would refer to it as a Bureau Plat.

The Writing Table is basically of rectangular form with either end stepped in and gently curved. below is a frieze which follows the shape of the desk top. The end curved frieze sections have a shaped bottom edge. the straight front frieze section houses a pair of side by side flush fitted drawers. and the rear section has a pair of side by side faux drawers.

The top and frieze are basically rectangular with curved ends. The top has its original gold tooled inset leather writing surface and a gilt cast brass edge molding as does the front of the frieze section. the top and frieze have parquetry banding of Coromandel with Fruit wood and Walnut inner and outer bandings. The Coromandel panels have abstract designs and line inlays in Ivory. On both drawer fronts and on either curved ends are quality crisp cast gilt Bronze decorative mounts.

The turned and tapered fluted legs are Ebonised and have intermittent complimentary walnut sections, terminate in all brass castor assemblies and are embellished with both upper and lower ‘rings of beads’ also referred to as ‘string of pearls'.

Typical of the quality is that the desk is ‘Double sided’ in that it is finished all round so it may stand away from a wall and be free standing in a room. The back of the writing table appears the same as the front except the drawers are faux.

Condition: Over all excellent for age and use. The veneers and inlays are perfect however some of the gilding is worn through use of almost a century and a half however as a service we can organise to have the worn pieces re gilded which would reintroduce the original ‘bling’ factor. The leather is original and very good however not perfect. If one preferred to change the leather to a colour of ones preference with decorative real gold tooling we can provide that service at a trade price.

Size: Width: 118cm x Depth 61cm x Height 71cm.

Price: Originally sent in by our vendor to be offered for sale at $6,500 however reduced to $5,485.

Sellers Observation: Excellent quality and wonderful style, in fact it is exhibition quality.
