This is a very good ‘Writing Box’ also known as a ‘Lap Desk, ‘Travelers Desk’ and a ‘Writing Slope’.

In this case it is the military version known as a CAMPAIGN WRITING SLOPE.

It would have belonged to a Military officer as it has Brass protective metal angle brackets and corner brackets For protection against accidental damage during a military campaign. It has a recessed and flush mounted brass carry handles which would not catch or snag. It also has a flush fitted and shaped brass keyhole escutchon and recessed rectangular plate on top for an engraved identification of the owner. At one end the flush mounted and recessed handle is in fact a drawer pull handle to allow access to a deep drawer which is locked by a brass pin that can only be removed by first opening the box and raising the lid so to allow access to the pin.

The interior also contains a folding two part velvet lined recessed writing surface and provisions for ink wells and writing equipment.

The condition is very good comensurarte with its age and use.
