These chairs were professionally restored by one of Sydneys best restorers in the 1980s. Our vendor had Robert Collins totally disassemble the chairs clean all the joints re glue and reassemble so they are rock solid. Robert then stripped, bleached and recoloured each chair individually then hand polishing them and antiquing them. The chairs were then upholstered the traditional way with webbing and hand rolled and stitched edges.
This thorough time consuming restoration process cost our vendor nearly $700 per chair on top of the purchase price of the chairs so owe him well in excess of $1,000 each about 40 years ago back in the 1980s. To purchase the chairs now and have the same work carried out to the same exceptionally high and comprehensive professional standard would now cost around $$1,500 per chair.....if you could find an antique restorer of Robert Collins craftsmanship and artistic ability as they are a dying trade.
