These chairs are an excellent find as they are a top quality and rare long set of ten ( 10 ) genuine antique English late first quarter of the 1800s Georgian period ( King George IV ) Dining Chairs of very superior quality.

They have been superbly crafted by specialist master chair makers from selected imported prestigious Central American ( Brazilian ) Rosewood of excellent figuring and lovely mellowed honey colour.

The chairs are basically a conventional shape however being commissioned for a superior dining room have some lovely additional features. The curved horizontal and canterlevered top rails are shaped at the top as they are embellished with a central symmetrical crest carving comprising of opposed French “S’ shaped scrolls with carved Acanthus leaf infill.and additional Egyptianesque carved detail.

The chairs feature several classic design influences from the ‘old world’ as a result of privileged young men rounding off their education were sent of to the antiquities ( Greece Italy Egypt and Crete ) known as the “Grand Tour’. They absorbed classic design influences and brought these back to England where they were incorporated in to Architecture Furniture and Interior Design.

The basic lower waist rail compliments the larger top rail and both are connected by a row of finely turned finials featuring ring turnings and vertical reeds. Below both rails are decorative short inverted finials.

The rear uprights are paneled in a reeded manner and terminate at the top by carved classic Ionic Greek capitols which appear to support the top rail at either end.

The seat rails are straight and vertical and support the well upholstered and nicely covered lift off seats which are easy to recover to taste if required.

Above the front legs are applied stylised patera and the front legs are very well turned and tapered with an excellent profile and feature full height bold reeds. The rear legs are of sabre form.

Condition: Excellent.
