This is a very fine example of a quality and genuine, Antique, English. 19th. century, William IV period ( 1830 - 1837 ) very well figured and of good colour Mahogany Tea Poy.

The top ‘caddy’ section is of sarcophagus shape and contains four lidded tea storage compartments with a middle area which would have housed a ( probably cut glass ) mixing bowl for blending the tea. The top caddy section is supported on a well turned and upward tapered centre column which has ring turnings, a bold lower carved Tulip and a lower reeded ring collar. The shaped plynth base is of flat quadruped form with bun feet beneath which conceal the original all brass castor assemblies.

The whole is in lovely and desirable condition and is made from the finest prestigious imported Central American Honduran Mahogany of excellent colour and fine figuring.

It is interesting to note that while the Chinese had been drinking tea from during the third millennium B.C. tea from China was only introduced into England during the 16th century reign of King Charles II and it was highly prized and very expensive and was often kept under lock and key. The concept of a social ‘afternoon’ cup of tea did not eventuate until the mid 19th century during the reign of Queen Victoria.
