Antique Italian 19th century Alabaster Maquette after Giambologna "The abduction of the Sabine Women....SOLD.
This is a superb, genuine, Antique Italian 19th century finely carved Alabaster model after the famous Renaissance work by Giambologna 1529 - 1608. Giambologna was also known as Giovanni de Bologna and was celebrated for his ‘fluid’ style in Marble and Bronze Statuary in the late renaissance manner.
The original of this masterpiece was sculptured between 1574 and 1582 after being commissioned for the famous Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany and is prominently featured in the Loggia dei Lanzi in the Florence Piazza della Signoria which is the main square in Florence Italy.
Interestingly at the time of commissioning nor at the completion this figure group was untitled and was later named The Abduction of the Sabine Women..
Desirably all three figures ( like the original ) are carved from the one piece of material.
The three figure sculpture group stands upon a separate horizontally squared and vertically rectangular base which has a bronze plaque mounted on the front.
This piece last sold in Sydneys Eastern Suburbs during the 1980s for $22,500.00.
