This superb and rare sculpture is known as ‘Valkyrie’ and also as ‘Towards the Unknown’. Consisting of Bronze, Ormolu and Ivory all upon a carved Limestone base bearing the signature Claire J R Colinet. These bronze and ivory combination subjects are often refered to as ‘Chryselephantine’.
Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet was born in Belgium in 1880 and later studied in France, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1913 and the Salon des Indépendants from 1937 to 1940. Claire Colinet worked in the Art Deco style and specialised in female statuettes of exotic dancers, striking models and ballet poses.She was a woman working in a field dominated by men and helped form the female union of painters and sculptors.
