This is a very ‘high end’ exceptional quality example of a genuine antique English early Victorian circa 1845 swivel and fold over top Card / Games Table supported on a central column and with a quadruped leg base. Like most of the finest pieces of the time it was superbly made by the finest craftmen from selected imported prestigious Brazilian Rosewood now mellowed to a deep / ‘honey’ colour which now highlights the attractive and decorative dark figuring.
The top is rectangular in form with a curvededge molding and rounded frontcorners. The top swivels and folds over to rest upon the recessed rectangular frieze section and reveals both a circular baise playing surface and there is a compartment for storage of cards and game pieces. The lower frieze and corners are shaped highly embellished with French Louis XV influenced ‘C’ and “S’ shaped scrolls plus there is a central cartouche with symetrically apposed stylised foliate carvings.
The central column is well turned with a bold profile and beautifully carved embellishments and from the cylindrical base flow four superbly shaped and carved cabriole legs which terminate in beautifully carved and detailed feet which have the original all brass castor assemblies beneath. The legs also feature carved knees and upward scrolled toes. The front of the base alsohas a bold stylised applied carving.
